How it Works

what we do
  • A family receives one-on-one training, coaching and support in their home that is based on their child’s specific needs.

A PLAY Project Consultant collaborates with the family to create a unique PLAY Plan with personalized recommendations of activities and techniques, based on an assessment of the child.

The plan, along with coaching, modeling and feedback provided by the PLAY Project Consultant, empowers parents to support their child through the stages of development.

  • PLAY sessions with the consultant are approximately three hours long, and take place in a family’s home once a month.

During each visit, the PLAY Project Consultant listens to updates from the family, answers questions, coaches the family, and models techniques and activities.

  • The PLAY Project Consultant also collects videos for which they provide written feedback and sends to the family for review between visits. PLAY Project families also receive ongoing reassessment to make sure the interventions are on point with the child’s needs.

    • The PLAY Project consultants focus primarily on the following principles:

      1. Fun with people – PLAY Project is relationship-based and affect (feeling) oriented. A child’s natural emotions and interests are essential for learning interactions which promote development.

      2. Put in the time – PLAY Project intervention is designed to improve the functional developmental level by engaging the child in intensive intervention daily.

      3. Accurately profile the child – This intervention assesses each child based on their comfort zone, sensory-motor profile and functional developmental levels.

      4. Play at the right level – PLAY Project is a flexible – tailored to the child’s developmental level. It is child-centered, but not passive. PLAY Project meets the child where he/she is and takes him/her to where they need to go.

Combining these key elements – family, natural environment, and play – the PLAY Project’s benefits are significant and proven effective.

  • “I would definitely recommend the PLAY Project to other parents. I feel that it’s really manageable, it’s natural. You’re playing, which is a way the child naturally learns. And, it teaches you to just slow down and follow your kids’ cues and follow their interests so that you can teach them to learn effectively.” – Julie Luu, Parent

    • A key factor in the success of the PLAY Project intervention is the intensity in which the family works with the child.

      • PLAY Project recommends at least 15-20 hours per week of intentional intervening. Families do this through both intentional play times and their regular daily activities and routines. The goal is to use what the family is naturally doing as opportunities to connect and engage with their child.

      • PLAY Project is led by parents and caregivers, therefore it is more affordable – reducing costs from as high as $40,000 down to approximately $5,000 per year. And it works.

Research shows that this model leads to improved relationships between parents and children and overall improved outcomes for children with autism, to name a few benefits.
