  • Frequently Asked Questions For Families

Here are a few questions families usually ask:
  • What is the PLAY Project

The Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters (PLAY) Project is an evidence-based, parent-implemented autism intervention developed by our Medical Director, Dr. Richard Solomon of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The PLAY Project helps parents develop better connections with their child through play and helps to improve their language, behavior, development and social skills.

What's the difference between the PLAY project and DIR?

    DIR – Developmental, Individualized, Relationship-based

The PLAY Project is designed to give families guidance, support and an effective treatment option. It is based on the DIR theory of Stanley Greenspan.

The difference between PLAY Project and DIR is that the PLAY Project is a more structured system, providing a community-based delivery system through in-home and school consultations.

How does PLAY project help my child?

Among the many benefits, the PLAY Project teaches families how to identify their child’s unique strengths and needs, how to effectively respond to their child’s behavior, and learn ways to support their child’s learning that better prepare them to be ready for school.

Why is the PLAY Project effective?

You know your child better than anyone else, which is why this approach is so effective. Parents partner with a PLAY Project Consultant to receive one-on-one training, coaching and support.

All PLAY-based activities are tailored for each child based on their developmental level, strengths and needs. A PLAY Project Consultant collaborates with the family to determine appropriate activities and techniques as part of a PLAY Plan. The intensive intervention is fun and developmentally appropriate, making it easily applicable to a family’s daily activities.

The PLAY Plan empowers parents to build their skills and support their child with autism through the stages of development.

How much does the program cost?

Because parents provide most of the hours of intensive intervention, the PLAY Project can be offered at an affordable cost for families. The cost can be as low as $5,000 per year, per child, while other types of intensive interventions can cost between $20,000 – $40,000 per year.

Please contact us to learn more about the PLAY Project and fees.

How long does my child need to participate in the PLAY Project?

Typically, a family will sign up for one year initially, however, most families continue the contract for a second year and depending on the needs of their child, may choose to continue receiving additional consultation after that.
